As part of its Galaxy Unpacked 2026 event, Samsung has officially unveiled the Galaxy Z Flip 8, one of three new foldable phones alongside the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Galaxy Z Fold 8 Ultra. The new clamshell-style foldable retains much of the design language of its predecessor, but it introduces a thinner chassis and a more feature-rich cover display, aiming to make the device more useful even when folded.
The Galaxy Z Flip 8 weighs just 180 grams and, when folded, measures 85.7 x 75.4 x 13.1 mm (3.37 x 2.97 x 0.51 inches). Unfolded, it transforms into a full-sized smartphone at 166.9 x 75.4 x 6.1 mm (6.57 x 2.97 x 0.24 inches). This represents a slight reduction in weight and thickness compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 7, making it one of the most pocketable foldable phones on the market.
Under the hood, the Galaxy Z Flip 8 is powered by Qualcomm's latest flagship chipset, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy. This processor is designed to deliver significant improvements in both performance and power efficiency, enabling smoother multitasking, faster app launches, and better gaming experiences. However, Samsung has kept the same 4,300 mAh dual battery found in the Z Flip 7, and charging speeds remain unchanged at 25W wired and 15W wireless charging rates. For users who demand all-day battery life, this may be a sticking point, but the efficiency gains from the new chipset could help offset this limitation.
Display and Cover Screen Enhancements
The main display is a 6.9-inch AMOLED 2X panel with a resolution of 1,080 x 2,520 pixels, featuring a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate and Vision Booster technology for improved outdoor visibility. The cover display, which Samsung now calls the Flex Window, measures 4.1 inches and offers a 948 x 1,048 resolution with a 60/120Hz refresh rate. These specifications are identical to those of the Galaxy Z Flip 7, but Samsung has packed new software features into the Flex Window to make it more interactive.
The highlight of the new Flex Window is the integration of apps, insights, and actions directly on the cover screen. A new feature called Now Brief provides users with timely information and next steps, such as upcoming calendar events, weather updates, and reminders, all glanceable without opening the phone. Additionally, Samsung has baked in deeper Gemini Intelligence capabilities, allowing users to automate tasks through side-key activation or natural voice commands. This positions the Galaxy Z Flip 8 as a more proactive assistant, capable of learning user habits and offering suggestions throughout the day.
Camera System: A Missed Opportunity?
One of the most criticized aspects of the Galaxy Z Flip 7 was its outdated camera system, and unfortunately, Samsung has not addressed these concerns with the Z Flip 8. The device retains the same triple-camera setup: a 50MP f/1.8 main (wide) sensor, a 12MP ultrawide lens, and a 10MP selfie camera. While these sensors are capable in good lighting, they fall short of the competition in low-light conditions and optical zoom capabilities.
On the bright side, the cover display allows users to utilize the main camera for selfies, and Samsung has introduced a new 'Camcorder Grip' mode that enables horizontal shooting while holding the bottom half of the phone. Video recording at up to 4K 60 fps now includes a horizontal lock option that stabilizes the horizon, similar to features found in action cameras like the GoPro Hero 13. This could appeal to content creators who value stabilization, but the overall camera hardware remains a weak point in an otherwise premium device.
Pricing and Availability
Despite being a minor refresh, Samsung has increased the starting price of the Galaxy Z Flip 8 by $100, bringing it to $1,200. This places it in direct competition with other premium foldables like Motorola's Razr+ and Oppo's Find N5 Flip. Preorders begin on July 22, 2026, at Samsung.com, Best Buy, Amazon, and other retailers, with shipping scheduled to start on August 7. The phone is available in a range of colors including Graphite, Cream, Mint, and Lavender, as well as exclusive online shades.
For existing Galaxy Z Flip 7 users, the upgrades may not be compelling enough to warrant an upgrade, especially given the unchanged cameras and battery. However, first-time foldable buyers or those upgrading from older models may appreciate the slimmer design and enhanced cover screen functionality. The Galaxy Z Flip 8 represents Samsung's continued refinement of the clamshell form factor, but it also highlights the need for more substantial hardware innovation in future iterations.
Beyond the Z Flip 8, Samsung also introduced the Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Z Fold 8 Ultra, which target productivity-focused users with larger internal displays and S Pen support. The entire foldable lineup runs One UI 7 based on Android 16, bringing improved multitasking features and enhanced privacy controls. The Galaxy Z Flip 8, with its compact size and AI-powered cover experience, aims to carve out a niche as the fun, fashionable, and functional smartphone for everyday use.
